Step by step guide to bookbinding

It is not easy to realize the work that is hidden behind the realization of a binding, because indeed the traditional binding goes through a series of very precise stages.

1. Placement
It consists of collating, drawing out, making repairs if necessary, preparing plain or marbled ends, trimming and placing in the placing press.

2. Sewing
It consists of binding and sewing the notebooks. It is done on hemp strings or on ribbons using a sewing machine.

3. The work of the book block
It consists of gluing the back of the book, rounding it and endorsing it, cutting the cardboard plates, making the passure, laying a muslin on the back and pressing the body of the book.

4. From primer to cover
It consists of laying the bands and the bookmark, filling the back, fixing the strings or ribbons and laying the nerve card which makes it possible to fix reliefs of different sizes.

5. Coverage
It consists of cutting the canvas or leather and trimming the pieces, gluing the cut material, covering the work and letting it dry under weight between 2 boards.

6. The finish
It consists of equalizing the fills, filling the counter flats, placing the guards and pressing. But also to make a headdress at the head and tail of the book.

7. Gilding
It consists of making the title pieces and ornamenting the covers and spine of the book using florets, palettes, nets, wheels on the cover.
